COCANO

Cooperative Cafeiere et Cacouyere
du Nord’Ouest

In collaboration with the Caritas-sponsored Coffee Cooperative Cafeiere et Cacouyere du Nord’Ouest (COCANO) and Pascucci, an Italian coffeer roaster, the GSC is working to establish an effective, long-term strategy for importing and sales of high-grade specialty coffee from Port-de-Paix to the United States. Distinguishing this project from most other fair-trade import models is the fact that eventually the coffee will be processed, roasted, and packaged by the cooperative themselves – thus eliminating the numerous middle-men in the coffee import business, and ensuring that profit remains in the hands of those who need it most. Solar Energy/Bakery Projects:
In Baie-de-Henne - the most remote, deforested region in the diocese of Port-de-Paix - the GSC is collaborating with local parish and women's religious community leaders to develop a sustainable solar-energy bakery that will not only reduce deforestation in the area, but will provide much needed income to the participants involved.
