Port-de-Paix is located in the northwest of Haiti on the Atlantic Coast, and it is the capital of the department of Nord-Quest with a population of 34,282. It was first discovered by Christopher Columbus, on December 6, 1492, who named it “Valparaiso” and settled near Mole Saint Nicolas. French filibusters founded Port-de-Paix in 1665. Port-de-Paix cultivates coffee, banana, cacao and rice.
